Almeria Region

The province of Almeria is situated in the south east of the Spanish peninsula and borders with the provinces of Granada and Murcia.  In all, this province covers 8774 square kilometres with a population of 425,000 inhabitants, of which 145,000 live in the capital city, also named Almeria.

Almeria is a year-round destination the average temperature is 18ºC and it stays at a pleasant 24.6ºC during the summer.  The beautiful; crystal clear, clean sea is normally a lot warmer than the air.

It was perhaps due to the beautiful scenery or the geographic situation that many different civilisations came to Almeria in the course of history. Important archaeological remains discovered in the province have helped researchers understand and realise the existence of very ancient cultures.

In Almeria it is possible to find modern and bustling tourist centres as well as those natural areas where man has scarcely left his mark.

Almeria has a varied coast line and much of this is completely un-spoilt, to the east of Almeria you can enjoy the rugged and desolate coast of the Cabo de Gata - Nijar Natural Park.  This is an arid desert landscape and the annual rainfall here is less than 200mm.  It is sparsely populated, few villages and a very low population density.  Visitors feel a sense of exploration here as many of the coves can only be reached on foot.  This area is particularly popular with nature lovers and back-packers.  The most popular coastal village is San José.
At the north of the Costa de Almeria are the wonderful beaches of Vera, a number of new complexes are being constructed here. A little further south is Mojacar which successfully combines the popular beach holiday with the hillside white village that tourist love to explore.

Almeria city is worth a visit with the Alcazaba castle overlooking the metropolis.
To the west we find the developing complex of Almerimar with Marinas, golf, hotels and many other facilities.

Inland, Almeria has an almost lunar landscape of desert, sandstone and dried up river beds and has long been a popular choice for filming American style spaghetti westerns, (The all time Peter O'Toole classic, Lawrence of Arabia was also shot here).  You can visit mini Hollywood or Yucca City, just outside Tabernas which was the set of A Fistful of Dollars and various other films and is open daily to visitors.

Almeria is only just emerging as a tourist area.  Its growth is mainly due to families looking for somewhere relatively quiet and unspoiled to take their holidays. Consequently, even though it retains an air of pure Spain, there is still plenty to see and do for visitors of all ages.
